Gaston Farm

Open Farm Days 2020

School Groups

Gaston Farm is very popular with school groups with our bookings filled each year with returning schools. The days that we are open during term-time can fill up quickly, with some schools already booked for next year, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Gaston Farm has been awarded the 'Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge' and has CEVAS accreditation through FACE (Farming & Countryside Education) and 'Access to Farms', recognising Gaston Farm as a suitable venue for educational visits.

School & Pre-school trips

Our school trips are suitable for up to approximately 120 children, with a minimum
booking of 30 children. Trips for pre-schools and primary schools run from 10am to
2.15pm and can be tailor-made every time. We like to work closely with teachers and
group leaders to ensure we understand what they want their pupils to experience and,
where possible, to try to link in with which curriculum topics that are being taught in
school at the time. Teachers and group leaders who wish to do a site visit prior to their
arrival are very welcome to book an appointment to be shown around the farm for
planning and risk assessment, free of charge.

On the day of your visit, your time at Gaston Farm can be either self-led or guided by one
of our farm leaders. In the morning, one of our team will meet you from the coach car
park, after a short briefing session and a chance to eat their morning snack, the children
are put into groups of 20-30 and belongings can be left behind. The day is broken up into
four fun activities of around 40 minutes, with all groups rotating to complete the activities.
For lunch you can either return to the indoor barn, enjoy outdoor seating or take your
picnic to the neighbouring council-owned park. The play park, while not owned by the
farm, is accessed straight from our private land, and offers a great opportunity for a leg
stretch and play for the children. Please remember to add this to your risk assessment. At
the end of the day, you’ll be escorted safely back to the coach.

What to wear
Who knows what the weather may bring?! You may need suncream or scarves! On chillier
days, and even on sunny ones, it can get surprisingly cold at the farm, particularly on the
tractor rides. We advise that children are encouraged to bring a hat to keep them warm.
Again, on hot and sunny days we advise sun hats to protect the children.
Many schools choose to bring the children in their uniforms; warmer or more practical
options may be advisable. Please remind parents that whatever their children wears, it is
best to wash it on their return home to reduce any possible transfer of germs. Likewise,
shoes or boots worn on the farm should be changed before getting back on the coach.
Gloves may not be worn when in the animal handling or animal viewing areas. Please do
not let adult helpers give drink or snacks to the children outside of the designated eating

Disabled visitors
Gaston Farm is a genuine working farm, opening for a very short period to invite the
public to learn more about what we do. We are not a ‘farm park’ or year-round attraction,
and as such, while we have done our very best, disabled visitors may find it trickier to get
We have designated disabled parking and an equipped disabled toilet. Much of the farm
is concreted and a ramp affords wheelchair access to the lamb handling area. There is,
however, large hardcore areas which are quite bumpy and tricky - we are sorry for this
and more than happy to help you - please ask! If you would like to discus access or
limitations for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility, please call us ahead of your
visit and we will be most happy to help.
Disabled visitors pay the full entry rates but are eligible to bring with them one carer who
will be granted free entry. Evidence of DLA/PIP payments must be provided to qualify for
a free carer. Please note the evidence provided must be dated within the last year. Such
evidence must be shown to our staff at entrance. If evidence is not brought or not in date
